Based on the 1988 movie, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was very successfully re-written as a musical in 2004. Fantastic new songs and fast paced comedic scenes keep the story clipping along.

It is much more than a story about con artists. It’s about the thrill of the ride and bringing the audience along for that roller coaster. There is an element of willing complicity from both the cons and their victims (and the audience!) where everyone gets caught up in the excitement of the game. There are moments of fully breaking the fourth wall, allowing the audience in on the action and the humour.

The show rests on the idea of creating a fantasy world as Lawrence lives by The Tempest quote “We are such stuff as dreams are made on.” The musical also explores the theme of contrast; the dichotomies of different classes and personalities. Lawrence, a debonair, sophisticated swindler who is well established and perhaps a little complacent in his opulent world meets Freddy, an unpolished grifter eager to learn the ways of high-stake scams. Freddy disrupts the longstanding routine Lawrence has built for himself. In a nod to My Fair Lady (“he’s so deliciously low”) Lawrence contemplates bringing him under his wing. What follows are the most ridiculous situations you can imagine. Knowing they’re swindlers allows the audience permission to laugh at how the main characters get themselves out of the most outlandish predicaments.

Their absolute joy in ‘the game’ keeps you rooting for them to the end, while perhaps enjoying seeing them squirm. This show gives us permission to leave behind the outside world for a few hours, be transported to the French Riviera, and to laugh out loud.

“Enjoy, and thank you for supporting live theatre!”
