Featured Artist
Debbie grew up in Colorado, and was first introduced to Japanese aesthetic principles by ceramic artist Mark Zamantakis, her high school art instructor. Zamantakis emphasized concepts of simplicity (kanso), nature-essence (shizen), and beauty in imperfection (wabi sabi) in his work and his teaching.
After high school, Debbie earned a degree in chemical engineering and worked in the oil industry in the western US for many years, but continued to feel the call of her creative interests. She retired early, and enrolled in Fine Arts studies at the University of Utah, where she experimented with clay, pencil, ink, and paint before discovering that paper was her favorite material. She has been working as an artist since 2001, and has exhibited her work in the US and Canada.
Debbie donates all proceeds from the sale of her artwork to organizations supporting wildlife conservation and animal welfare including Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Nature Trust of British Columbia, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She and her husband became Canadian citizens in 2014, and are delighted to call Vancouver Island home.
