About the Chemainus Theatre Festival:
The Chemainus Theatre Festival is a not-for-profit professional theatre company located on Vancouver Island. Since opening the doors to its 274 seat venue in 1993, annual attendance has grown from 14,000 to over 50,000 patrons per season. In addition to producing live, professional theatre, the Chemainus Theatre experience features the Playbill Dining Room, Fireside Lounge and Gallery Gift Shop.
Position Overview:
The Chemainus Theatre Festival is seeking a part-time Prep Cook and Food Runner to join the Playbill Dining Room team. We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about culinary arts and inspired by global cuisine. At the Chemainus Theatre Festival, we strive to create a supportive and welcoming workplace where creativity, innovation, and growth are encouraged.
The scheduled hours for this position will vary, depending on the theatre’s production schedule. Hours will range between 15-30 hours per week while the restaurant is in operation. Shifts are variable and include weekends and evenings.
Key Responsibilities:
Food preparation
• Washing, peeling, chopping, slicing, and measuring ingredients
• Preparing basic components like sauces, dressings, marinades, and stocks
• Portioning ingredients for line cooks and chefs
Station setup and organization
• Setting up workstations with all necessary tools and ingredients
• Labeling and dating all prepped items
Kitchen cleanliness and safety
• Keeping prep areas clean and sanitized throughout the shift
• Following food safety and storage guidelines
• Properly storing ingredients to maintain freshness
Equipment handling
• Using knives, slicers, mixers, and other kitchen tools safely
• Reporting malfunctioning equipment
• Maintaining cleanliness of tools and work surfaces
Support during service
• Restocking the line as needed
• Assisting cooks with simple tasks during busy periods
• Communicating shortages or issues to supervisors
Required Qualifications & Skills:
· Food Safe / Food Handler Certification
· Basic kitchen experience
· Be consistent, punctual, and neat in appearance
· Follow directions and adhere to company policies and procedures
· Be cross trained for other positions if needed
· Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift moderate weight
· Reliable transportation and consistent attendance
