KEN LUDWIG’S BASKERVILLE
A Sherlock Holmes Mystery
Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery is coming to the Chemainus Theatre Festival stage from May 2nd to June 1st; a hilarious retelling of Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle’s The House of the Baskerville.
Get your deerstalker cap on — the play’s afoot! From multi-award-winning playwright Ken Ludwig comes a fast-paced adventure about everyone’s favorite detective solving his most notorious case. Set in the wind-swept moors of England, the mystery unfolds after the male heirs of a prominent family begin to disappear one by one. Follow along as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson crack the case!
Chemainus Theatre audiences will rediscover a classic story updated into a madcap version where five actors play forty different characters. From Broadway World, “The joy in watching [the] witty new play Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery is not in solving the crime but in the plethora of wildly imaginative characters you meet along the way. By dispensing with British formality, Ken Ludwig has given us a play that is ingeniously funny and will keep you guessing until the curtain call.”
Ken Ludwig may well be the most performed playwright of his generation. Ludwig was inspired by 39 Steps to write Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery. 39 Steps was a Chemainus Theatre Festival audience favourite in 2022, which also wove comedy and mystery together to create a memorable theatrical experience. “Comedy gold … [Baskerville] finds the perfect mix of slapstick and thrills.” Theatermania shared in their review.
Directed by Roy Surette, Sherlock Holmes will be played by Charlie Gallant and joining him as his partner-in-crime (solving) is Alex Gullason as Dr. Watson. Rounding out the additional cast of forty characters is Abraham Asto, Jay Clift, and Caitlin Driscoll and witnessing these quick character changes is sure to be a highlight of this production. Audiences will feel the magic that only theatre can bring as they settle in their seats and the house-lights dim thanks to the work the Design Team with Hans Saefkow as Set Designer, Costume Designer Crystal Hanson Sound Designer Chris Ross-Ewart sound, and Rebekah Johnson as Lighting Designer. Rounding out the cast and crew is Devon Vecchio as Stage Manager with Assistant Stage Manager Aldana Padron and Understudies Mack Gordon and Rachel Kent.
