Auburn Blind: Strings & Stories  |  June 6

Auburn Blind is a truly Canadian indie/folk band composed of a core three of classically trained, multi-instrumentalist musicians who have joined forces over coffee, laughter, and the rigorous world of classical music. With Jessica’s pure and lyrical voice on lead vocals, Kai with their multi-instrumental and arranging talent, and Erin with their rich cello lines, their music creatively explores the human experience with power, intimacy, and humour, resulting in a unique and inviting take on the indie/folk sound.
You will hear original songs and some familiar tunes that you will recognize. Originally playing as a string trio (Jess on viola, Kai on violin, Erin on cello) to enrich the sounds of local bands Current Swell (Rifflandia), and Fox Glove (Rock the Shores, Let the Love In, EP recording), they wowed the Alix Goolden Hall crowd at the 2019 Love In with their rendition of Ain’t No Sunshine, and have taken off since then!

Their classical chops, applied to a love of songwriting and arranging, ability to play multiple instruments, and soulful vocal harmonies, create a wonderfully diverse and original range of sounds and moods. They publicly premiered at the Wood Stove Festival in Cumberland late in 2019. They put on their first public show on March 14th, 2020, and have performed all over Vancouver Island since then. They are currently recording for their first upcoming album!

Paparazzi – Opera on the Rocks   |  June 7 – 8

Prepare yourself to enjoy one of the most unique theatrical experiences you’ll ever ‘experience’, when you ‘experience’ acclaimed tenor Luciano Paparazzi for an evening of Operatic Comedy. Finally, Opera and comedy TOGETHER as they were never meant to be! Paparazzi will take the audience through the last century of popular music and “educate” you on why opera is the greatest form of music ever devised. Because, in his over-inflated opinion, all ‘pop music’ has been influenced and shaped by it. Is it true? Who knows? Paparazzi believes so, and would it hurt to hear the man out? Worse case scenario is that you have some great laughs and listen to excellent music in this good production, clean silliness for audiences of all ages.

Canadian theatre professional Kieran Martin Murphy (Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, King Arthur in Spamalot) not only morphs into this hilarious spoof of the great Pavarotti, but he also takes on a cavalcade of other musical greats to prove his thinly veiled point. Tom Jones, Roy Orbison and Elvis appear and some other surprise guests. The show is guaranteed to tickle the funny bone and delight your ears…don’t miss it!

Tower of Song: A Creative Tribute to Leonard Cohen  |  June 13 – 15

When Leonard Cohen sang these words, the Tower of Song was a metaphor for the inspiration that flows between songwriters, each toiling away on their own, but connected by their shared craft. Moved by this concept, celebrated BC singer-songwriters Oliver Swain and Glenna Garramone collaborated to produce a project that is a dialogue through song and a tribute to the legendary songwriter. Re-imagining both rare and classic works of Cohen, the duo have crafted a sound that resonates with both longtime Cohen fans and a younger audience.

Tower of Song began as a one-off tribute night for a packed house at Vancouver’s The Media Club in 2011, and has since grown into an actively touring folk duo. Produced by Garramone, she invited fellow Victoria musician (Juno nominated) Oliver Swain, and the show gave Swain and Garramone the chance to grow their musical chemistry. Together as Tower of Song the two have arranged some of Cohen’s timeless songs beautifully, for two voices, string bass, piano, guitar, and banjo.
