Now in its 28th season of live professional theatre, the Chemainus Theatre Festival is recruiting a Front of House Manager.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Front of House Manager will seek to foster the ‘Chemainus Theatre Experience’ by managing all aspects of the front of house department with a goal of providing an enjoyable, safe patron experience.

 The Front of House Manager will also manage and administer the volunteer program.  The Theatre is grateful for the support of 100+ volunteers who fulfill ushering, concession, and coat check duties.

The scheduled hours for this position will vary with the Chemainus Theatre’s production schedule.  During production weeks, the weekly schedule provides a minimum of 32 hours.

Position Duties:

  • Oversee patron experience on theatre property and meet needs that arise in a professional manner.
  • Supervise front of house staff and volunteers that fill front of house positions such as ushers, greeters, and coat check attendant.
  • Ensure professional presentation of public spaces and remedy any deficiencies.
  • Make public announcements and/or pre-show announcements when required.
  • Supervise and manage concession services.
  • Manage concession inventory and order product as needed.
  • Handle cash and manage POS concession system.
  • Provide safety and security services, including first aid as well as situation and conflict management.
  • In the event of an emergency, the Front of House Manager, or their designate acts as the emergency coordinator when they are on shift at the theatre.
  • Write reports pertaining to all front of house activities and incidences.
  • Attend all meetings required for Front of House Manager.
  • Responsible for front of house staff and ensuring they are adequately trained and equipped to facilitate operational aspects of front of house.
  • Administer the volunteer program, including recruitment, orientations, ongoing training, scheduling, and supervision of day-to-day volunteer positions.

  • Keen eye for detail.
  • Demonstrated communication (written & verbal), and presentation skills.
  • Ability to deal with the public.
  • Comfort with public speaking.
  • Ability to supervise staff members and volunteers.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to be part of a team.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations and a volunteer team are valued assets.
  • Able to work weekends and evenings with a flexible schedule.
