Auditions and Script Submission Guidelines

General Auditions

The Chemainus Theatre Festival organizes and holds general auditions in Chemainus, Vancouver or in major city centres in Canada. The dates for general auditions and procedures to apply are announced at least one month in advance through the Canadian Actor’s Equity call board, on this website and through notifications. Priority communications and call-times are given to Equity members. The Chemainus Theatre Festival maintains detailed records on actors who have auditioned and submitted.

We keep a file of the photos and resumes of actors who have worked and/or auditioned for the theatre for at least three years. If your information changes after an audition please send us an updated headshot including your name, address, telephone number, and email address and send it to:

Casting
The Chemainus Theatre Festival directors, in consultation with the Artistic Director, invite individual actors to read for roles in specific productions throughout the year. These auditions are held on an invitation-only basis in Vancouver, Chemainus and city centres as the projects warrant.

Seeing your Work
The Artistic Director and Artistic Associates try to see as many theatre performances on Vancouver Island and in the Lower Mainland as possible. If you are cast in a production one of these areas, please send us an invitation card or email invite. Time permitting; one of the artistic staff will attend. We regret that it is impossible for us to see everything. We encourage those who send invitations for performances taking place off-Island to consider travel from Vancouver Island and accommodation.

Out-of Town Actors
Throughout the year, Equity actors visiting from out of town are welcome to request an audition appointment by email via the Production Coordinator. Auditions are scheduled on a time-available basis.

Play Submission Guidelines

Regarding new script submissions from playwrights and agent:

In addition to the Faith and Family Cycles, Chemainus Theatre Festival continues to look for new works for our Mainstage and Kidzplay Series.  In our 20 year history, we have developed and staged over 30 new Canadian plays and adaptations on our Mainstage and in our Kidzplay Series.   We are interested in plays that involve classic themes and/or characters and that align with our mandate and goals (Our Mission) – in short – plays that explore and nourish the human spirit.  We are also interested in mounting second productions of new Canadian work.

Preferred submission dates: May 15 – June 15.

Please include the following:

  • A sample package with a cover letter describing the play
  • Any future plans for the play and its development
  • No more than 10 pages of the manuscript.
  • A brief biography
  • Contact information including address, telephone number, email address and any other contact information.
  • If you include a self-addressed stamped envelope we will return your script if it is not selected. If not, we will recycle it.
